Chemical Peels

Chemical PeelThe skin is a remarkable, living breathing organ that protects us from external aggression throughout our lives. After the age of 40 skin cells regenerate more slowly and the signs of ageing gradually begin to show. The structure of skin changes with time and it becomes less elastic and flexible. There are fewer fat cells in the lower layer (dermis) of the skin and it becomes more transparent whilst the oil and sweat glands which help keep the skin less supple become less active.

A chemical peel is designed to improve the appearance of the skin and can be used to treat a particular area such as the face, hands, neck and back. Chemical peels can help to improve the appearance of blemishes and reduce the effect of smoking and sun damage exposure. Peels are also effective in uneven pigmentation acne and acne scarring.

Treatments may vary in length but are often recommended as a rejuvenation cycle of between four and six treatments.

There are three types of chemical peels, superficial, medium and deep. With all type of peels it is recommended you use a skin product in preparation to ensure the skin is in optimum condition prior to the peel and skin products following treatment.

Chemical PeelSuperficial peels

Remove the skin cells from the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) and usually use a combination of alphahydroxy acid (AHA) and betahydroxy acids (BHA) such as glycolic acids. Treatment is usually quite quick and your skin may feel pink and quite tight for a couple of hours following treatment.

Medium peels

Remove the skin cells from both the epidermis and the upper part of the dermis (the middle layer). This is usually a combination of Trichloroacetic (TCA) and glycolic acid. A stinging sensation may be felt during the procedure and following treatment your skin may be red and peel.

Deep peels

This is carried out by a Surgeon or Dermatologist with relevant skills and experience in an establishment registered with the Healthcare commission.
